On the Backend:

The brown column is the grade_internal attribute value assigned to products.

Products are assigned to one or more values in the grade_internal attribute (populated on the fly from grade_low and grade_high). Click on a product to simulate the state of its grade_internal attribute

On the Frontend:

The black column is the grade_internal layered navigation used in Magento to filter products.

Customer choices (in a colored column) are translated to the layered navigation grade_internal attribute selections, and then products are filtered. Click on a tab to activate its column. Then click on an age/grade (in the colored column) to see which grade_internal values should be set.
